Michigan’s Best mlive.com set out to find the incredible spots across Michigan that have been open for years, yet remain a favorite to this day. Places steeped in history, destinations for generations of diners. Spots that serve up delicious dishes that you can only get there, or places that are just beloved by the local regulars for always serving up quality food.

The search for “Michigan’s Most Iconic Restaurant” revealed classic dining spots, hidden gems, and longtime favorites all over the state. The journey took MLIVE/MIBEST from hip, urban settings to rural abodes, from the streets of Detroit to the shores of Superior, looking for those incredible spots across Michigan that have been open for years, and yet remain a favorite to this day. Places that have become destinations for generations of diners. The restaurants where you go to celebrate something important. Spots that serve up delicious dishes that you can only get there, or places that are just beloved by the locals and regulars for always serving up quality, well-made food.
We’ve come up with quite a list of iconic restaurants. They range from white-tablecloth, put-your-fancy-clothes-on spots, to a deli where anything goes, so feel free to wear your flip flops and yoga pants. All of our spots feature incredible homemade food, with great attention to detail and the use of quality ingredients.
We loved hearing the personal stories and histories associated with these restaurants, told to us by enthusiastic and passionate owners and staff. It’s these hard workers who really make these spots so special, and we thank them for creating such iconic restaurants for all of Michigan to enjoy (2019.)

Did you see us on TV? Legs Inn was featured on UTR: Under The Radar Michigan (Episode 310) -- a fast paced, modern, weekly program that explores the best people, places and things that are unique to Michigan.
A vacation with us is perfect if you are seeking relaxation amid Northern Michigan's unspoiled woods. Yet we are close to a variety of Northern Michigan's primary destinations, historic resort towns (Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island) and attractions. Our cottages are located in a natural, private wooded area with access to a sandy beach and the crystal clear waters of Lake Michigan.

LEGS INN, named for the stove legs that trim the roofline, is one of Michigan´s most exuberant and unusual landmarks. The building reflects Stanley Smolak´s creativity and the craftsmanship of local Odawa (Ottawa) Indians. A Polish immigrant, Smolak came to the United States in 1912 and settled in Cross Village in 1921. During the 1930s Smolak enlisted the labor of Odawa and other area residents to construct the inn from locally gathered timber and stones. A self-trained artist, Smolak used tree roots, limbs and driftwood to carve fantastical creatures into the furniture and decorative objects used in the inn. He called the carvings “nature´s oddities.” Until his death in 1968 at age 81, Smolak continued his creative work at the inn, which had become a social center for the community.
